Arrow Arum (Peltandra virginica), also known as Green Arrow Arum, is a unique and attractive plant that can add a touch of elegance to your aquarium. Known for its arrow-shaped leaves and sturdy growth, Arrow Arum is primarily found in wetlands. This plant is suitable for aquarists looking to introduce a distinctive and robust addition to their pond.

Planting and Placement

Substrate: Arrow Arum thrives in a nutrient-rich substrate. Use pond soil or a mix of sand and gravel supplemented with root tabs to provide essential nutrients. Plant the Arrow Arum deeply enough to cover the roots while leaving the crown (where the roots meet the leaves) slightly above the substrate to prevent rot.

Light Requirements: Arrow Arum prefers moderate to high lighting.

Water Conditions:

  • Temperature: Arrow Arum prefers a temperature range between 68°F and 77°F.
  • pH: It thrives in slightly acidic to neutral water, with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5.
  • Hardness: Soft to moderately hard water (4 to 12 dGH) is ideal for Arrow Arum.

Maintenance

Pruning: Arrow Arum grows relatively slowly and does not require frequent pruning. However, regular maintenance to remove dead or yellowing leaves helps to keep the plant healthy and prevents decay. Trim back any overgrown stems to maintain the desired shape and size.

Fertilization: Arrow Arum benefits from regular fertilization. Use root tabs to deliver nutrients directly to the roots. Liquid fertilizers can also be used to supplement water column nutrients, especially in tanks with other plants.

Propagation

Arrow Arum propagates through rhizome division and occasionally through seed production in aquariums. To propagate via rhizome division, carefully separate a portion of the rhizome with roots and leaves attached. Replant the new section in the substrate, ensuring it is adequately anchored and positioned for optimal growth.
